Late is a long grid of nearly one hundred 10-inch-square oil portraits of “old-old” women, age 75 and up along with some slightly larger portraits. Sourced from I-phone snapshots, social media posts, or grainy obituary photos, these portraits pay homage to women in late life.

These five paintings, all 60 x 40, depict old-old women who are fiercely holding onto their independence. On their own, each painting tells a personal life story; together they tell one story.
The women in the paintings could be life-sized, but their scale is smaller, the height of an average toddler, another developmental stage dealing with the dichotomy of dependence and independence.

I’m thinking about climate change, migration, plans and guides, Van Gogh, Nozkowski, Sillman, Klee, old-old women, eggs, and reproductive rights. It’s serious stuff but the painting part is fun.
